ABOUT MONTAVILLA
Montavilla, originally Mount Tabor Village in 1890, got its abbreviation from the "Mt. Ta. Villa" streetcar stop in 1892. Despite the service ending in 1948, the nickname remains.
The heart and soul of the neighborhood is on SE Stark Street, only two blocks away, where you’ll find local shops and restaurants galore including well-known and cherished spots such as The Observatory, Yaowarat, and Redwood to name a few! At the center of the Montavilla downtown area is the Academy Theater, a second-run cinema built in 1948 and restored in 2006 that serves beer, wine, and pizza.
The neighborhood also features an annual street fair in the summer, a farmers market, and Montavilla Park which includes a Portland Timbers-sponsored futsal field.
